The biographical: Raf Simons
Another Great one, Raf Simons, has come to lead Dior, after the known departure of John Galliano. The House's new Artistic Director wishes to recover the elegance that the brand once had in times of its eponymous founder. Simons himself assured: “My aim is a very modern Dior, but at the end of the day, I also look back.” He looks back to the brands original intention, inheritance and meaning. The 44 year-old Belgian will be in charge of Dior's Haute Couture, Prêt-à-porter and women's accessories. Even though, he likes to keep a low profile, Simons is the right one to take over Dior. His minimalistic style seems to be the breath of fresh air that the brand needs. An exciting taste of what fashion is all about: an ever-changing industry. Raf Simons, who studied Industrial Design, began his career in 1995 as a menswear designer. He first worked with Walter Van Beirendonk and then created two succesful menswear lines “Raf Simons” and “Raf by Raf Simons”. Just to get us in Simons' mood, here we leave you his latests collections at Jil Sanders, that can only make us dream about what his new proposals will be for Dior.
Tras la marcha del esplendoroso John Galliano viene a ocupar su puesto Raf Simons. El nuevo director artístico de Dior pretende recuperar la elegancia que Christian Dior imprimió a esta marca en el pasado. Dicho con sus palabras: ‘Cuando me comprometo con una casa, me comprometo con su intención original, su herencia original y su significado’. Este diseñador belga de 44 años se encargará de las colecciones de Alta Costura, Prêt-à-porter y accesorios femeninos de la ‘maison’. Su nombre no era muy conocido entre los grandes de la moda por el mínimo ego que ostenta y tampoco era el más indicado para el puesto ya que el minimalismo de Jil Sanders, su anterior contrato, se aleja del excesivo y tremendamente femenino estilo de la marca parisina. Estudió diseño industrial y en 1995 se convierte en diseñador de ropa masculina. Al principio trabajó para Walter Van Beirendonk en moda masculina y creó dos colecciones ‘Raf Simons’ y ‘Raf by Raf Simons’. Os dejamos muestras de su último trabajo en Jil Sandres donde nos hacemos una idea de su estilo y de todo lo que tendrá que hacer para adaptarse al de Dior.

Women who read are dangerous

My contemporary literature professor introduced us into the Spanish narrative of the 1950's. He talked to us about "the war children". These kids lost 3 years of education, which then affected the country's future and their own. The young writers of this epoch were a generation of students that didn't do social critic, but that aimed to portray what censured press didn't say about the Franco government: they unveiled the slums of Madrid's outskirts and their shabby lifestyle. Sánchez Ferlosio belongs to this generation.
"El Jarama" unfolds on a hot Sunday at the riverbank. It all happens in two scenarios, the village's canteen, where life is peaceful, monotonous and predictable; and the bank of the river, where a group of friends, that come from the capital, spend their time amid quarrels, jokes and romances. But the day is meant to end with a tragedy. The most fascinating idea of the novel is what the Jarama river represents. The river is life: it runs gently, then a tragedy happens but it all goes back to its course, to its indifference. It all occurs in a way that the misfortune is downgraded, lowered to a mere happening, easy to forget and to accept. The skill of the author lies in the few interventions he does as a narrator in order to gain in objectivity. He roughly delineates the scenes and actions, instead he gifts his own voice to the characters. This is a book to read with relish, because it has something important to tell and show us through the art its pages enclose.

Mi profesor de literatura contemporánea nos estaba introduciendo en la narrativa de los años 50. Nos habló de ‘Los niños de la guerra’. En la práctica, la infancia de estos niños había consistido en tres años sin escuela y sólo después se dieron cuenta de lo negativo que fue para España y para ellos. En los años 50 son estudiantes universitarios que no escriben con la intención de hacer crítica social sino que cuentan lo que el régimen franquista no ilustraba en la prensa. Descubren las chabolas de las afueras de Madrid y el malvivir de las gentes que las habitan. Sánchez Ferlosio pertenece a esta generación.
‘El Jarama’ es el transcurrir del día en un domingo caluroso a orillas del río. Son dos escenarios, uno la taberna del pueblo, donde la vida es apacible, monótona y predecible, y otro las mismas orillas del río, donde un grupo de amigos venidos de la capital pasan el rato entre riñas, gracias y amores de juventud. Pero el día acaba en tragedia. Lo más interesante es la idea que encierra propio Jarama. El río es la vida: discurre mansamente, ocurre una tragedia y vuelve a su indiferencia. Pasa de tal manera que puede conseguir que la tragedia se convierta en algo más, algo fácil de olvidar y aceptar. La maestría del autor reside en las pocas intervenciones que hace como narrador para conseguir la mayor objetividad. Dona su voz a los personajes, describe acciones o paisajes concretos y de manera rápida y escasa.. Ferlosio es un maestro del lenguaje, utiliza una amplia variedad de registros y cada uno de forma magistral. Es un libro para disfrutar porque tiene algo muy importante que decirnos y por el arte que encierra entre sus páginas.

The Magazine Rack
For this upcoming season, retro glam is pretty much everywhere and I'm just loving it! Most magazines have twenties or fifties inspired editorials. Where does the vintage influence come from? I would definitely say it has something to do with the audiovisual industry: series and films have taken a glance to the past, Mad Men, The Artist and The Help for instance are just some of the names that come to my mind at the moment. Whatever it is, I just can't help getting excited about this trend!
Estoy totalmente encantada por el glamur retro que ha venido a imperar esta nueva temporada. La mayoría de revistas nos presentan editoriales inspirados en los años veinte o cincuenta. ¿De dónde viene toda esta influencia vintage? Definitivamente creo que tiene algo que ver con la industria audiovisual. Series de televisión y largometrajes han hecho un guiño al pasado. Mad Men, El Artista, Criadas y Señoras son algunos de los nombres que recuerdo en un primer golpe. Sea lo que sea, ¡no puedo evitar emocionarme por esta tendencia!
