Set in China at the beginning of the XX century, East Wind, West Wind, is the intimate and simple portrait of a cultural collision. In his novel, Pearl S. Buck narrates the conflicts between the East and the West when one of these cultures filters in the others most protected place: the family.
The main character, Kwei-lan, is a young girl from a distinguished chinese family, raised in the most traditional and strict way. Her new husband has lived a long time abroad and comes back to China with modern ideas that make him reject his wife and her customs.
This is the story of a transformation. Kwei-lan relates in first person her experience and swiftly takes us into her situation. East Wind, West Wind is a short, but profound and impecable novel.
