Wild Swans -Jung Chang-

Through the
eyes of Jung Chang, her mother, and grandmother, the author tells us the
turbulent history of China in the XX century, and the dramatic lives of its
inhabitants. The story starts in the beginning of the century when the writer’s
grandmother is subdued to the restraining rules of the epoch, when women didn’t
even receive a name. She lived as one of a general’s concubines, in what she
recalls as a prison; and regained freedom only after her husband’s death. The
only good result of that relation was the birth of Bao Qin, who was raised in a
country dominated by the Japanese. For their tyrany, she was filled with resent
and hate, and decided to join the communists who wanted to regain independence
for China. Jung Chang was finally born in a communist country, leaded by Mao
Tse Tung, to whom all the youngs blindly worshiped.
However what
in the begginning seem to be a benevolent and just regime turned out to be a
fraudulent and hedious government. Due to demagogy, tortures, and the lack of
freedom, the Chinese people became a fearful, submissive, and miserable society
that could barely fight against injustice. Wild Swans is a poignant story, one
of those that remembers us happenings that we can’t, that we shouldn’t forget.

A través de
las vidas de Jung Chang, de su madre y de su abuela, la autora nos cuenta la
turbulenta historia de la China del siglo XX y las trágicas vidas de sus
ciudadanos. El relato inicia al comienzo del siglo cuando la abuela de la
escritora se ve sujeta a las restrictivas normas de la época, cuando las
mujeres ni siquiera eran dignas de recibir un nombre. Tras vivir como concubina
de uno de los generales del Kuomintang (la institución en el poder), en lo que
ella describe como una prisión, se ve liberada únicamente gracias a la muerte
de su marido. Fruto de esa relación nació Bao Qin quien creció en un país
dominado por los japoneses. Inundada de odio y rechazo a los opresores, se unió
a los combatientes comunistas que querían devolver a China su autonomía. Jung
Chang nació, pues, en un sistema de gobierno comunista liderado por Mao a quien,
tanto ella como sus coetáneos, adoraban ciegamente.
Sin embargo,
lo que en un principio parecía un régimen benévolo y justo fue más tarde el
causante de atropellos y tragedias para los ciudadanos. La demagogia, las
torturas y la falta de libertad hicieron de la sociedad china un pueblo
temeroso, sumiso y miserable que difícilmente podía luchar contra la
injusticia. Cisnes Salvajes es una historia que llega al corazón, una de aquellas
que nos recuerdan hechos que no podemos, que no debemos olvidar.
