The catcher in the rye was a very polemich book in its time. Salinger prodigiously gets into the mind of a seventeen year old teenager, Holden. The story barely relates three days of this boy’s life. But they are very three decisive days. Holden gets expelled of a private school and is afraid to face a new disappointment when getting back home with his parents. For such reason he decides not to go back, but to spend his days wandering around New York city. In his short adventure he comes in and out of nightclubs, and hotels, bumps into strangers, prostitutes and friends, and tries to find himself.

We could point out, the very special relation between Holden and his little sister, Phoebe, which is the only one Holden is willing to communicate with.Their touching conversations are the climax of the book. Even though, the novel has an undeniably sarcastic, cinic and negative tone, the reader learns that it's not contradictory to grow, to become mature and, at the same time, be loyal to ourselves.

La novela causó toda una polémica al salir a la venta en los Estados Unidos. En ella, Salinger se mete de manera prodigiosa en la mente del protagonista de diecisiete años, Holden. La historia apenas cuenta tres días en la vida de este chico. Pero se trata de tres días decisivos para él. Holden es expulsado de su colegio privado y teme enfrentarse a otra desilusión al volver a casa. Por esta razón decide no regresar y deambular por la ciudad de Nueva York. En su breve aventura, Holden no deja de entrar y salir de bares y hoteles; de toparse con desconocidos, prostitutas y amigos; y de intentar encontrarse a sí mismo.

Aunque hay muchos temas que merecen ser tocados, queremos destacar la especial relación que Holden tiene con su hermana pequeña, Phoebe, la única persona con la que Holden está dispuesto a hablar. Sus entrañables conversaciones constituyen el clímax de la obra. Aunque, el tono del libro es más bien sarcástico, cínico e, incluso, pesimista, el lector no acaba el libro teniendo esa sensación, sino por el contrario, lo que se extrae de la lectura es que se puede crecer sin dejar de ser auténticos.
